The morning light was still cool and gold when we found him, deep in a ritual as old as the species itself. He had spent the better part of an hour rolling in mud, coating himself thoroughly, deliberately — not play, but instinct. Mud is an elephant's oldest defense: natural sunscreen, insect repellent, and coolant, all in one, passed down through behavior rather than teaching, practiced identically by every tusker before him.

When he finally waded into the river to rinse clean, something gave him away instantly: his ears, thinned and delicately veined, had taken on a faint reddish tint — the mark of an elephant who bathes often, his skin worn just translucent enough to show the blood beneath. It's a small, easily missed detail, the kind only patient, repeated observation reveals.

There's a particular satisfaction in watching an animal complete a ritual entirely for its own sake, indifferent to any audience. "The Gaj" holds that unguarded moment — mud rinsing into current, morning light catching water on grey hide, a creature simply tending to himself the way his kind always has, and always will.
